Australian-Born Band Evol Walks Shakes Up Rock 'n' Roll in The States

Updated: Apr 11, 2019

Evol Walks is in an element all their own within the rock world. They are fronted by a classically educated musician and conjure up bone chilling heavy guitar instrumentals mixed with strong, dramatic vocals.

Take theatrical influence from Evanescence combined with the energy of Atreyu and that should give you a fairly good idea of what to expect on their hit single Our Time Is Now.

"Our Time is Now is a song written for the disenfranchised, those who aren’t happy with the current state of world affairs. A call to action," said lead vocalist Leah Martin-Brown.

The music video takes that message and amplifies it. It follows a stereotypical "older white male" character portraying a politician surrounded by words that could be associated with him. By the end, the word "defeated" is written across his forehead to demonstrate a sense of hopefulness for change within our political system.

One change that Martin-Brown pines for is to end sexism within the music industry.

I remember the days when female front women in rock were considered taboo risk takers. Although it still takes courage to be an unapologetic woman in a cutthroat industry, it is much more celebrated and coveted than it used to be.

Evol Walks doesn't want to be known as a female-front rock band...but just...a rock band. We are both in agreement that until the term "female fronted" is no longer considered a sub-genre, there is still a gender divide that we are guilty of unconsciously creating ourselves. We must alter our own conditioning in order to see change.

"You never hear someone say a pop, country or R&B group are female fronted as a reference as if its almost a separate genre. I have been guilty of using this term myself but this is mainly due to the fact that we, as females, are conditioned to use this term as if that might be the difference in us being booked or not," said Martin Brown. "It would be really amazing if the industry could get behind us as much as the fans do at our shows and stop this weird gender divide that seems to still exist in the heavier genres."

Aside from her strong musical messages, she has a unique perspective of the industry itself. She was accepted into the Queensland Conservatorium of Music ‘Bachelor of Popular Music’ program and uses her formal training to back up her effortless hard rock chops.

This gives her a sharp edge in a competitive business, which comes in handy since she packed up her entire life to move from Australia to Los Angeles to pursue music.

"I studied everything from Music Production and Audio Engineering to History of Music, World Music, Performance and Popular Songwriting. It really helped me navigate my way when I started up my own band and helped me to reach out to the right people to help promote our sound and what we were doing," said Martin-Brown.

Through the last few years, her business savvy brain combined with her undeniable musical abilities took her career to new heights. She shared the stage with Black Label Society in Europe and performed with members of The Hollywood Vampires including Johnny Depp (just to name a few).

The big plans don't stop there. Evol Walks is releasing another new music video for the next single Burning in Silence and planning shows in LA, Vegas, and more.
