I have a very special connection to New Years Day that makes their new album Unbreakable especially awe-inspiring to me. We met in the spring of 2012 in the back alley of a small club venue in Orlando, FL. Ash walked up to me in a dramatic flowing maxi skirt that covered a broken leg from a recent tour injury. Her fellow band members followed behind her in all black. Their demeanor was friendly and relaxed, despite their intimidating appearance.
As you can see from the photo, the glow up is REAL.
They've developed a formula for success in their music that continues to grow stronger with each release. If you've followed the band for a while, you know it well. Gothic themes, metal breakdowns, vocals fueled by raw energy with a hint of drama, strategically catchy melodies, and an underlying message of empowerment. This has remained true ever since the first time I heard the band when they debuted their Mechanical Heart EP in 2012.
Since then, New Years Day beat the odds to rise above the van tours and 300 cap rooms. They built a reputation for embracing darkness, oozing boldness, and looking larger than life on stage. They are one part of the female fronted powerhouse triad that toured alongside Halestorm and In This Moment in 2018. After years of hard work, they made a name for themselves in the rock world.
Unbreakable marks a new era of positivity and empowerment to follow up their previous release Malevolence. Ash is owning her power and sharing her newfound strength with her half-head army (also known as her fanbase that dyes their hair in the same red and black pattern as the frontwoman). They found a surprising balance between uplifting lyrics, infectious melodies, and heavy riffs. It's intense, yet accessible for the masses to enjoy.
I sat down with the band in Orlando, FL during their most recent US tour with Falling In Reverse. Check it out below!
